Every Kid Needs Things That Fly

By Ritchie Kinmont.  Ritchie is a designer by profession and a homeschool dad and inventor the rest of the time.  His message to homeschoolers is that kids need plenty of opportunity to work with their hands, to "tinker."   They need to be encouraged to develop their imagination and creativity and to "make something cool" out of ordinary things. In our focus on "curriculum," we shouldn't forget the masking tape and the hammer and nails!

Ritchie was asked by Smith-Gibbs publishing to prepare of series of books of projects for parents to do with their children.  The first book, published in August of 2005, is titled Every Kid Needs Thing That Fly.  The projects range from easy to difficult and use simple materials such as pop bottles, PVC pipe, and plumbing supplies.  Included is a "joy stick" for the car, a "jet pack" to strap on a small back (the jet noise and flying power to be provided by Dad), a masking-tape airport for the living room floor, a water rocket and several hot air balloons for the back yard, and even a workbench.

Softbound, $14.95.

Key to the Science of Theology
By Parley P. Pratt.  In 1892, after 39 years of hard work and sweat, President Wilford Woodruff threw a switch and lowered the Salt Lake Temple capstone into place.  Thousands gave a shout!  The outer walls of the Salt Lake Temple were now finished and the capstone was set.  Just moments before, President Woodruff placed a few books inside the capstone (the round ball upon which the statue of Moroni stands).  Among them were the scriptures, and a copy of Elder Parley P. Pratt’s book, “The Key to the Science of Theology.”  Elder Pratt had been personally tutored by the Prophet Joseph Smith.  He captured what he learned, and laid it out in a systematic study, naming it “The Key” to the study of theology.  The capstone of Zion is theology. - Jeffrey Marsh, "There Must Needs Be a School in Zion," http://alumni.byu.edu/Sections/chapters/pdf/Zion_Marsh.pdf.

Softbound, $10.95.
Joseph Smith as Scientist
John A. Widtsoe (scientist, university president and apostle) wrote textbooks and was the author of several books for Church members which harmonized and highlighted both scientific and gospel subjects.  This work, subtitled "A Contribution to Mormon Philosophy," treats Joseph Smith's teachings concerning the earth's creation and laws governing the universe and other parallel phenomena with more recent scientific thought.  In addition to placing Joseph Smith's teachings into a framework of universal law, Elder Widtsoe also discusses the "Law of Evolution" and the role of the "Sixth Sense."

Softbound, $10.95.
