Five Foundational Notebooks:
It is our opinion that every child should leave home with five notebooks.  These notebooks will set priorities and give order to his education; they will provide a sense of completion when he graduates from childhood to adulthood; and they will stand as a witness of his character and his testimony to his family, his peers, and his posterity.
These notebooks are:
     The Plan of Happiness Notebook
The Language of The Fathers Notebook
     The Liberty Notebook
     The Personal History Notebook
     The Family History Notebook
The Plan of Happiness Notebook is explained below.  Information on the other books will be posted at a later date.

The Plan of Happiness Notebook

Thank you for bringing this great idea to us. Not only is this a great idea for organizing our gospel study, but also I have been wondering how to relate every subject to the gospel. Using the plan we can study biology, astronomy, math, geology, the importance of planning and organizing, reading and its importance in gospel study, what is the significance of Christ being call The Word and how that relates to reading, history and how it all works in Heavenly Father's plan or Satan's ploys. It seems to me it covers everything.  Thanks, Marie

Until recent years, Seminary and Institute teachers attended a Symposium at BYU each August in preparation for the upcoming school year.  In 1993 President Packer spoke to the teachers about the importance of presenting a brief outline of the course material during the first day or two of class.  That overview would orient the students and give them a place to connect the isolated pieces of information they would later learn.

Then he gave them an "assignment" to prepare a brief outline of The Great Place of Happiness.  He assured them that the task would be more difficult than it might seem and that they should expect it to take months.

We recognize that President Packer has given an assignment in which there is great power, and we suggest that it be taken up by every parent and every child in the church, especially every homeschooler.  We also suggest that each person record his own overview in a notebook to be added to over the years.  We believe this will become the foundational exercise and the foundational framework of a Saintly Education.
